Adults aged 21 and over can possess up to 6 ounces (170 grams) of cannabis or its equivalent in other forms, such as edibles or concentrates.

Cannabis in New Jersey is taxed at the retail level for adult-use (recreational) purchases, while medical marijuana is largely tax-exempt.

Medical Marijuana:
Registered medical marijuana patients do not pay state sales tax at checkout. Medical cannabis purchases are exempt from sales tax.

Adult-Use (Recreational):
Adult-use cannabis is subject to the standard state sales tax of 6.625% at retail.

In addition, New Jersey allows a local cannabis transfer tax of up to 2%, which municipalities may apply. This can increase the total tax at checkout depending on the location.
